Antioxidants and Aging
One of the theories of aging which has much support is the free radical theory of aging. This theory states that the main cause for aging is the occurrence of free radicals in the body.
Free radicals are unstable molecules found in the body which form as a byproduct of the different chemical reactions. Being unstable makes the free radicals highly reactive and they will only stabilize after they have found a free electron. They are therefore continually reacting with other molecules within the body causing a chain reaction. It only ends when the last molecule to react doesn’t need an electron to become stable.
The chain reactions which are caused by free radicals usually result in cell damage. This causes among other things the distortion of the cells genetic makeup. In many cases, this changes the cells operational mechanism resulting in its accelerated death or even accelerated multiplication as is seen in cases of cancer.
You should not be afraid that you have numerous free radicals in your body. Everyone has them and you can do something about it. The main way to reduce the number of free radicals in the body is to have a constant supply of antioxidants in the body.
Antioxidants are a group of vitamins, minerals and enzymes found in food. They are mainly found in fruits and vegetables. Berries have high concentrations of antioxidants.
Some of the best known antioxidants include vitamins C and E and minerals like selenium.
Antioxidants work by providing the electron the free radicals need to make them stable. They however will not become unstable themselves although in an oxidized state. It is important therefore to have a constant supply of antioxidants in every meal.
By preventing the reaction of free radicals with other molecules in the cells, you will be able to slow down the aging process.
